Can I hook up my computer tower to my laptop?

I want to hook up my laptop to my computer tower (without using an internet router if possible) so that a can get some files from it and use of few programs that I have installed on the computer. Does anybody help me with this? Please list any cables or equipment that I may need!

How about using either a network crossover cable (assuming both have network ports) or possibly getting hold of a large USB stick? These are fairly cheap nowadays.

Using a crossover cable negates the need for a router or hub, but you will need to set both IP addresses manually and on the same subnet.
